PODIUM AND MAIDEN VICTORY IN THE PORSCHE CARRERA CUP ITALY

05/05/2013 - Alberto Cerqui's adventure in the Porsche Carrera Cup Italy started in the best possible way this weekend in Misano where the young driver from Brescia has been immediately among the protagonists.

On Saturday Cerqui showed all his potential in qualifying when he fought for the pole position despite the relatively few kilometers on his clock behind the wheel of the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. The session ended for him with the second quickest time, just 24 thousands shy of the best time.

In race one the filler present on one side of the track ruined the start of the Ebimotors driver forcing him to give a position away. Cerqui afterwards kept himself close to the front-runners in the first part of the race but could not find the chance of a concrete attack. His face was nevertheless quite good until the chequered flag that welcomed his first podium of the season in third place.

The second race awarded higher emotions though. Started fourth due to the partial grid inversion, Cerqui was extremely quick at the go and gained two positions. His attack for the lead followed two corners afterwards: at "Quercia" the driver from Brescia managed to pass his team mate De Amicis pulling away later on. His advantage increased lap by lap and got close to the final twenty seconds that marked his win and a supremacy never questioned.

Alberto Cerqui:
"The weekend started well since Friday where I set the fastest time in free practice and the same competitiveness was confirmed in qualifying and in the races thanks to the great work done by the whole team. Winning at the debut is a stunning result: we knew we had the potential to do it but we were also aware of the value of our rivals.
As expected overtaking was not easy and in race one I decided not to run too many risks despite the pace was there. In race two I got the most out of the initial stages instead, and then the clear track made everything easy even if the race seemed to be endless.
This is just the first round of a long and difficult season, but we certainly leave Misano full of optimism and determination".

Cerqui is currently third in the classification with 27 points, just two shy of the leader Giraudi. The Porsche Carrera Cup Italy will resume next 16 June in Austria at Red Bull Ring.
