13/01/2012 - After winning the Italian Superstars Championship with BMW Team Italy, Alberto Cerqui will take part in the FIA World Touring Car Championship 2012 (FIA WTCC) that, together with the World Formula One Championship and the World Rally Championship, is one of the three main championships in the world devised by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile.

The young talent from Brescia, 19 years old, will be at the wheel of a BMW 320TC lined up by former world champion Roberto Ravaglia's Team ROAL Motorsport who deems Cerqui, despite his young age, to be ready for the debut in the most prestigious series reserved to touring cars.

The calendar schedules twelve rounds taking place in four different continents. The season opener will be held in Monza next 11 March and will be followed by the rounds in Spain, Morocco, Hungary, Austria and Portugal. Teams will afterwards move to America in July where they will debut in Argentina before heading to Brazil and United States. The season finale will be on stage in Asia with the races in Japan, China and on the very difficult street circuit of Macau.

Alberto Cerqui:
"After winning the Italian Superstars 2011, FIA WTCC is the natural choice to continue my career in touring racing cars. Having the chance to continue racing for ROAL Motorsport is a further cause of enthusiasm, even if I am aware that it is not going to be a walk in the park as a lot of circuits will be new to me and the level of rivals will be very high.
The choice to move to covered wheels racing when only 18 awarded me with huge satisfaction and I hope I will add some more in this coming season; I did not abandon the dream of reaching Formula One though, competing at such high levels as WTCC will allow me to acquire some precious experience in International competitions too".
